The focus area is in the north-eastern Eastern Cape in the mountainous area of the Southern Drakensberg, on the border with Lesotho. The area stretches from the Ongeluksnek Provincial Nature Reserve in the east, to the area near Tiffindel Ski Resort in the west, near the town of Rhodes, and approximately 10 km either side of the South African-Lesotho border. The area encompasses approximately 200 000 – 300 000 hectares of mountain wilderness, in an area previously referred to as “No-man’s Land” between the two countries. This area has immense conservation importance and excellent tourism potential. The area is truly one of Southern Africa’s last wilderness areas.
An opportunity has been identify to conserve this region and to use the tourism potential that conservation provides, to unlock the sustainable development options of the region. The project will seek to create economic opportunities through this process for the marginalized rural communities in the region through public-private partnerships.
The Landmark Foundation helped to develop this project and have sourced the resources (R2 million) to conduct the project. The Ukhahlamba District Municipality, through the funds sourced by the Landmark Foundation, is undertaking implementation of the project.
